Vale Craig Seymour (28/9/1950 – 27/8/2012)

It is with great sadness that Southern Area Concert Band (SACB) announces the passing of one our founding and life members, Mr. Craig Seymour, who passed away peacefully on Monday 27th August 2012, aged 61 years.

Born in America, Craig completed his formal education and musical training before migrating to Australia. He was an integral part in founding SACB along with Mrs. Nancy Ovenden (Dec.) in 1971, fulfilling the role of Music Director/Conductor in 1975 and taking the SACB through a wonderful music journey for 30 years until his retirement in 2005. Craig presided over a successful era for SACB in the 1980s and 1990s, where the band at times, had up to 70 members on the books, and upon joining the Victorian Bands’ League, enjoyed considerable success in both state and national competitions.

Craig was honoured with life membership to SACB in 1986 and ultimately with the title of Emeritus Music Director for his years of service to the band and community music. He was a wonderful teacher and musician with an intimate knowledge of his craft and influenced the musical careers for several generations of players. Some of Craig’s rehearsal methods are still used in SACB rehearsals. He has a left a wonderful legacy, with the SACB as strong as ever, celebrating our 40th anniversary last year.

Please note that funeral arrangements are yet to be confirmed. If you wish to be informed regarding the details of Craig’s funeral, please email Lauren Zuegn secretary@sacb.com.au.
