As you may be aware, the Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police has taken the decision to ‘civilianise’ the Pipe Band and to disband the Victoria Police Showband and Code One (rock band),
We have been contacted by ‘Band Together’, who are the spouses, partners, family and supporters of the Victoria Police Bands and who have formed a support and advocacy group to reverse this decision and have the bands resourced appropriately (recruit a drummer and sound technician). The group is not affiliated with any organisation or political party, they simply want to support the Victoria Police Bands because they know they are a great Victorian community asset.
Over the weekend of 17th and 18th August, 2013, 27 bands participated in the Victorian State Band Championships. This is out largest number of bands since 2008 (also 27 bands). A complete list of results is now available on the results page.
Special congratulations to Jack Kelly as the 2013 recipient of the Frank Wright Medal.
Jack began his music career aged 11 at the Collingwood Technical School in 1940. Since then he has played with a further 5 bands; Melbourne Advent Brass, City of Heidelberg, Preston Municipal, Kew Band and Darebin City Brass – Northern Brass.
For the last 21 years he has been very involved and pro-active in promoting and teaching youth in brass, both in schools and community bands. He is currently the Musical Director of the Darebin City Brass Youth Group.
The VBL wish Jack all the best with his future endeavors.
