Some of Victoria’s best bands are travelling to Launceston this Easter weekend to compete at the Australian National Band Championships.

The 2016 State Band Championships will be held at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Ballarat. Tickets are available at the door.

As has become tradition, the Saturday night of the State Solo & Ensemble Championships weekend will see the annual Night of Champions concert at Our Lady of Mercy College.
All the Open Brass Solo Champions will take to the stage to battle it out for the title of Champion of Champions for 2016.
A night filled with fantastic music, played by some of the finest musicians in Victoria.
Tickets available at the door – $10 each, $5 concession
The set works for the 2016 State Band Championships are as follows:
Open and Junior Concert Bands – Own Choice
Junior Brass Bands – Own Choice
The Major Work for each of the following grades will be:
Open A Grade Brass – REM Scapes – Thomas Doss
Open B Grade Brass – The Saga of Haakon the Good (2007) – Philip Sparke
Open C Grade Brass – Sinfonietta No. 1 Johan de Meij
For Open D Grade Brass the set work will be a hymn – Evening song by CC Scholeveld, arranged by Jan de Haan
This means Open D Grade Brass bands will all play the same hymn but will pick their own Major Work, Concert Item and March.
The 2016 Australian National Band Championships were held over the Easter weekend in Gawler, South Australia. Despite some tough competition from bands around the country and overseas, there were some great results for Victorian bands and soloists.

Footscray Yarraville City Band – Open A Grade Brass – 3rd place
Boroondara Harmony Brass – Open C Grade Brass – 3rd place
Keith Moore – Open D Grade Brass Champion Drum Major
Michael Mathers – Open B Grade Brass Champion Drum Major (for the fourth consecutive year) and the overall Champion Drum Major Jim Brill Memorial Trophy (for the second consecutive year)
Aidan Purdy – National Champion in all 4 tuba sections – an incredible achievement
May Thomas – National Open French Horn Champion
Andrew McAdam – National Open Trumpet Champion
Sam Beagley – Junior Bb Cornet National Champion and National Junior Champion of Champions!
Llewellyn Morris – Open Tenor Horn – 3rd place
Steven Vlahek – Open Timpani & Open Snare Drum – 2nd place
Harrison Steele-Holmes – Junior Tenor Trombone – 3rd place

Oakleigh Brass Band are seeking silent films to be part of their film festival “Picture Night” in October 2015, as part of their ANZAC contribution. Picture Night is supported by the Victorian Government and the Victorian Veterans Council.
December 1915: on the home front in Oakleigh, Victoria, the Oakleigh Band played music to accompany silent movies – newspaper articles from the time suggest that this was the first time that movies were shown in Oakleigh.
A century later in October 2015 Oakleigh band will recreate this event, this time with locally made films. Short listed entries will be shown, with the Oakleigh Band again providing the live sound track.
First prize for the best film is $500, second prize is $250. Continue reading
