Sunshine Community Brass is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Kevin Cameron as their new musical director.
Over the weekend of 17th and 18th August, 2013, 27 bands participated in the Victorian State Band Championships. This is out largest number of bands since 2008 (also 27 bands). A complete list of results is now available on the results page.
Special congratulations to Jack Kelly as the 2013 recipient of the Frank Wright Medal.
Jack began his music career aged 11 at the Collingwood Technical School in 1940. Since then he has played with a further 5 bands; Melbourne Advent Brass, City of Heidelberg, Preston Municipal, Kew Band and Darebin City Brass – Northern Brass.
For the last 21 years he has been very involved and pro-active in promoting and teaching youth in brass, both in schools and community bands. He is currently the Musical Director of the Darebin City Brass Youth Group.
The VBL wish Jack all the best with his future endeavors.

First elected in 1981, Executive Councillor & VBL Vice President Ian Douglas has retired as the president of the Croydon Citizens’ Bands after serving 26 years in the role.
He was presented with a photographic memento (pictured below) of each of the three Croydon bands, and his work as Drum Major leading Croydon Brass Band when they marched in the 2012 Australian National Band Championships held in Melbourne.

An integral part of the Victorian banding movement, the VSYBB plays a vital role in the development of the youth of our movement. Through rehearsals, performance opportunities and the chance to play under guest conductors, the VSYBB offers unique opportunities to young and developing players of all abilities. The President, Executive and members of the Victorian Bands’ League have been saddened to hear of the death of Cornish musician, composer & teacher Goff Richards, who has passed away after a long illness.
Many VBL members will remember Goff from his visit to Melbourne in April 1998 as the Chief Adjudicator at the Australian National Band Championships organised by the VBL, and held at Monash University. Ian Douglas was VBL President at the time, and Chairman of the Organising Committee for the Championships. He remembers Goff as a truly gracious gentleman, to whom nothing was too much trouble, and who encouraged all the competitors in their banding endeavours. Victorian Bands will have played many of his beautiful band arrangements, and will have appreciated his skill as an arranger. Continue reading
