107.9 ABC Ballarat is one of ABC Local Radio’s newest stations, beginning its on-air existence one chilly winter morning on June 30, 2003. It is the largest ABC regional station in Victoria and is home to a team of broadcasters, journalists, program-makers and online producers, providing news, programs and online content primarily about Ballarat, Ararat, Daylesford and Colac as well as the greater South West Victoria region including Hamilton, Portland, Port Fairy and Warrnambool.

Long serving member of the VBL Executive and Croydon Citizens’ Bands Ian Douglas has been awarded the 2014 Frank Wright Medal in recognition of over 40 years of service to Victorian Community Bands. It honours famous Ballarat musician Frank Wright who conducted bands in Ballarat before an illustrious career in London as a Professor at the Guildhall School of Music and as Director of Music for London County Council.
When conferring the award at the Victorian State Band Championships in Ballarat, VBL President Megan Stapleton told the audience that Ian has been President of Croydon Citizens’ Bands for 24 years, and has served on the VBL Executive for 35 years, with a total of eight years as President. He is currently a VBL Vice-President, and still plays in several bands.

The VBL is pleased to announce the major work selections for the 2014 State Band Championships are as follows.
Major Works for Junior Brass Bands and all Concert Bands shall be Own Choice. The test pieces for Open Brass Bands are listed below.
- Diversions on a Bass Theme – George Lloyd
- Firestorm – Steven Bulla
- Sinfonietta – Gordon Langford
- Renaissance Suite – Franco Cesarini
As per the VBL rules, bands may not play any winning piece for a period of thirteen (13) months unless subsequently chosen as a test piece. As the test pieces have been announced prior to the Bendigo Eisteddfod, any band who chooses to play the relevant test piece for their grade at the Bendigo Eisteddfod and subsequently wins will be ineligible to compete at the State Championships.
The official schedule will be released and entries will open on May 19th 2014.
