Geelong Concert Band: Position Vacant: Music Director

The Geelong Concert Band Inc. (est. 1987, affil. Victorian Bands' League) is the largest arts-based community group in the Geelong region. With over 140 members across three ensembles, the Geelong Concert Band provides an avenue for beginning, emerging, and established musicians of all ages to perform a variety of concert band repertoire. The GCB performs at numerous community events including its own major concerts (3-4 per year) and the annual Geelong Carols by Candlelight at Johnstone park. Rehearsals are held on Friday nights during school terms.

The Geelong Concert Band seeks to appoint an enthusiastic, engaging Music Director to provide artistic direction to the entire organisation and take up the role of Principal Conductor of the Senior Band. The Senior Band comprises approximately 40 players and seeks to establish itself as an outstanding regional ensemble that encourages players to extend their skills to an even higher level.

The appointee will be an exceptional leader committed to developing the highest standards of musical performance within a community environment. He or she will demonstrate the following attributes:

  • Experience directing large ensembles at an advanced level.
  • Robust knowledge of concert band repertoire.
  • Ability encourage, inspire, mentor, and challenge musicians from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to foster musical growth among existing members, including a focus on nurtuing player progression through our Workshops and Community Bands coupled with an active desire to attract and develop new talent.
  • Ability to build strong, positive relationships both within the organisation and with external parties (musicians, teachers, sponsors, etc).
  • Desire to work with the committee to achieve the organisation's strategic goals.

An annual honorarium will be negotiated with the successful applicant.
