VBL State Solo Contest Rekindles Confidence
With increased entries and a refreshing air of optimism, the Victorian Solo & Party Championship has been hailed an outstanding success.
Held at the Kew Music Centre and St Anne’s Primary School over the weekend of 16th and 17th July, the VBL State Solo & Party Championships have rekindled confidence in our movement in Victoria.
Adjudicator Greg Aitken thanked the VBL for the opportunity to return to the birthplace of banding in Australia, and Steve Ford hailed the event, encouraging the younger players to revel in the chance to perform, not just compete. Bruce Armstrong was again his supportive and nurturing self. Adjudicating the Juvenile sections, woodwind and junior ensembles, his comments were positive and extremely helpful to all competitors.
The official accompanists have again given outstanding support to performers. Jodie Lockyer, Robyn Cole and Jane Ferdinands were excellent, particularly given the long hours of concentration.
Many performers enjoyed the relaxed environment, and audience numbers were excellent.
The VBL will be reviewing future Solo & Party Championships in an effort to encourage even greater participation. The review will include assessment of the venue and facilities, and networking with schools. Many opportunities exist to expand the range of events, in particular where upper secondary students would benefit from performance opportunities in preparation for assessments.
