Vale Stan Elliott - South Gippsland Shire Brass Band
Darryl Hunt, President, South Gippsland Shire Brass Band has sent us the following message on 15th February 2010 :-
"It is with deep regret from all involved with music in the South Gippsland area and beyond that we announce the passing of much loved and esteemed musician Stan Elliott.
Stan joined the Wonthaggi Citizens Band in 1940 at the age of 10, he learnt music there, and became registered with the VBL in 1942. Stan rose to become Principal cornet player, Deputy Bandmaster, served on Committee, and received a Life membership of the Wonthaggi Citizens Band. He continued his strong association with the band over the years.
Stan moved to Leongatha and joined the South Gippsland Shire Brass Band in 1968, when it was known as Woorayl Municipal Band. Stan received a life membership of the band, and has served as Bandmaster, and Deputy Bandmaster.
While he was Bandmaster, in 1981, he took the band to a win in E Grade at the LaTrobe Valley Eisteddfod.
Stan was on committee for over 35years, during his time he held several offices such as Librarian, and Property Officer.
He has taught many musicians over the years and acted as musical mentor to many others, passing on his skills.
Stan's dedication and skill was displayed by his bugling on Anzac Day and Remembrance Day, and at RSL funerals for 30 years.
In 2009 Stan received a Victorian Bands League 60 year service award, and was registered as a player with the VBL for an amazing 68 years. He was a brass band musician through and through, with brass band music the centrepiece at the celebration of his life.
He will be greatly missed for his playing, but mostly for being a top bloke."
The VBL expresses its condolences to all who will miss him.
