Adjudicator announcement – 2017 Victorian State Band Championships

The Victorian Bands’ League is pleased to announce that the adjudicator for the 2017 Victorian State Band Championships is Simon Cawthorn.

Simon CawthornSimon is a graduate from the Tasmanian Conservatorium of music where he studied trumpet and flugelhorn.  Simon has played in various ensembles in Australia including The National Australia Brass (NAB), Hobart Wind Symphony, augmented with the Melbourne Opera company and has been privileged to travel with bands such as Derwent Valley Concert band to Japan, China, Canada and America.  As a soloist Simon has won several state and national awards including winning the National open flugelhorn competition at the ANBC in Adelaide 2011. In 2013 Simon was one of three conductors in Australasia to be awarded a Lady Stewart Conducting Bursary to study under Professor David King from the Royal Northern College of music in the UK.

Simon has also been musical director for a number of concert and brass bands including the Hobart and Glenorchy City Concert Brass, Tasmanian Youth Orchestra Wind Ensemble and teacher in charge of bands in several schools and colleges. He also received the Tasmanian Bands League Badge of Honour for 2016 for outstanding services to community banding.

Simon has been an assessor and an adjudicator of musical performance and was chief adjudicator at the TBL State solo and party championships and an adjudicator for the National Solo Championships in 2017.  He enjoys seeing wind and percussion players reach their full potential and in his spare time he plays drums for Hillsong Hobart.

Russell GrayRussell Gray’s career as a conductor began in 1998, when he was appointed as the resident musical director of the Stavanger Brass Band (Norway). Since then his reputation as an authoritative interpreter of brass band music has been acknowledged at home and aboard. Since 2008, he has been principal conductor of Molde Brass Band (Norway) and is Adjunct Professor of brass at Queensland University (Australia). Russell has enjoyed considerable success within the world of brass band competitions with leading ensembles in Norway, Denmark, Finland, France, Switzerland, Japan, New Zealand, and Australia.

Russell enjoyed periods as the principal conductor of Foden’s, Fairey and Leyland brass bands and since 2012 has been principal conductor of Reg Vardy Brass Band, the leading band in the North of England. A proud Scot, Russell was born near Glasgow, and came to prominence within the world of brass bands as a cornet virtuoso. During his student years, he was a member of the world famous Black Dyke Band and went on to enjoy a number of years as principal cornet of the Leyland Band. He has also produced six solo albums, including two acclaimed releases featuring historic cornet repertoire from the celebrated Arban collection of solos and studies.  Russell is a Yamaha endorsed artist and is much in demand as a leader of workshops, clinics and seminars. He also leads Yamaha’s star-studded NEO Brass Ensemble. He has appeared to great acclaim at the Royal Albert Hall (London) and Symphony Hall (Birmingham) to the Grieg Hall (Bergen), Stravinsky Hall (Montreux) and the Sydney Opera House.

Russell dedicates much of his time to the development of young musicians. He has conducted the National Youth Brass Bands of Switzerland and Queensland (Australia) and in 2014 was appointed artistic director of the National Youth Brass Band of Scotland. He is a recipient of the prestigious Iles Medal of the Worshipful Company of Musicians in acknowledgment of his outstanding services to the brass bands.

Southern Area Concert Band presents “Marches and Memories”

The Southern Area Concert Band is performing on Sunday 21 May from 2.30pm at the Kingston City Hall, 985 Nepean Highway, Moorabbin, featuring a mix of old favourites and stunning new pieces. Come and enjoy marvellous marches by Sousa, the gorgeous folk tunes of Australia’s own Percy Grainger, the exhilarating orchestration of Gustav Holst and the dramatic ‘Pilatus: Mountain of Dragons’ by Stephen Reineke. Tickets available at the door (no pre bookings): $25 adult, $20 concession, children under 10 free.

Remembrance Day Concert- Frankston RSL

Frankston RSL has been fortunate enough to have the Band of the Royal Regiment of New Zealand Artillery performing for us as a tribute to Remembrance Day.

The band will be performing in the afternoon for a school childrens Remembrance Day Service at the Frankston War Memorial.

The evening performance will be for 1 1/2 hours commencing at 7.30pm.

As noted on the flyer entry is by gold coin donation.

I would recommend the meals at the Frankston RSL and this could be a good social night for your members.

Grimley, a small Yorkshire mining town, is threatened with being shut down and the only hope for the town’s men is to enter their Brass Band into a national competition. They believe they have no hope until Gloria appears carrying her Flugelhorn. At first mocked for being a woman, she soon becomes the only chance for the band to win. However, in joining the band she puts her relationship with her childhood sweetheart Andy on the line…

Stonnington City Brass presents BARBERSHOP AND BRASS

Join Stonnington City Brass, The Melbournaires Harmony Chorus, and the Stonnington Training Band as we present an afternoon of Barbershop and Brass.

Proudly supported by the City of Stonnington, this concert will offer a variety of both brass and barbershop music, as well as the rare opportunity to hear the choir and band combined, which will be fantastic!

With music ranging from traditional through to show tunes, a Scottish favourite and even a special treat for the children there will be something for everyone.
